DESCRIPTION

This work documents the 144 feeder cups included in The China Harvest before and after they were included in a controlled explosion.

From the exhibition to The Power of Twelve; new works drawing on Mount Stuart’s history as a Naval hospital during World War One; to The Power of Twelve, The China Harvest, Wrong Right Hand, Moss Depository, Witness Boards II, Floating Groins/Fastened Groins, The Velocity of Drops.

research/process

The artist’s collection of 144 feeder cups were fragmented in a controlled explosion, undertaken by the Belgian Bomb Disposal Unit, DOVO-SEDEE. The unit is still operational along the Western Front, in Belgium and France where the ‘Iron Harvest’ of unexploded bombs is made safe through destruction every year; in 2017, 222 tonnes of ammunition was gathered in and around the Ypres Salient alone. By photographing the feeder cups before their destruction, Borland has ‘preserved’ them whilst simultaneously overseeing their fragmentation.

In more conventional situations, witness boards provide a record of scatter patterns resulting from the detonation of explosives or firearms. When analysed this information may be used by forensic teams and in courtrooms as evidence.
